Medicare has a special set of billing rules called CCI Edits. Click here for background information on CCI Edits.

Billing Rule Warning

When a procedure code pair triggers a CCI Edit, the system will automatically apply a 59 modifier to the secondary code in the procedure code pair to indicate that the procedures are separate and distinct:

Removing the 59 Modifier

If application of the 59 modifier is not appropriate, uncheck the box in the Actions Area as illustrated. When removing the 59 modifier, the Column 2 services may not be billable.
